To date, United For the people has provided services for Iraq War Veterans as young as 26, to World War II Veterans in their 90's. Our initiative for 2018 is to hire one to two full time veteran drivers so we can assist more veterans in need of our services. With two drivers, we will be able to also extend our service to include the VA hospital in Temple, Texas as well as to civilian doctors outsourced by the V.A.

Impact Statement

The founder of the organization works a full-time job and also provides the transportation for the Veterans. Because of this limitation, he can only service an average of 2 Veterans per week. In 2017 the Veterans Transportation Service made 72 trips with only one person under limited availability. We project that a full-time dedicated driver would be able to provide an average 4-6 Veterans per week resulting in 260 round trips per year per driver. This will allow us to extend this service for homeless Veterans free of cost, extend our service area to include the Temple Hospital and greatly reduce the number of Veterans we have to turn away each week.

Needs Statement

This year, our objective is to place two vehicles in service along with two full time veteran drivers of the vehicles. This will come at an annual cost of $92,000. The following is a breakdown showing the direct cost for the year in support of the Veteran Transportation Service and where we would utilize the much needed resources:
Veteran Driver (North) : $30,000
Veteran Driver (South) : $30,000
Additional Vehicle : $15,000
Vehicle payment: $3,600
Vehicle maintenance: $3,400
Vehicle Insurance: $2,400
Wheelchair/Scooter lift: $1,500
Fuel costs: $3,600
Cell Phone: $1,200
Marketing: $600
Laptop/Tablet: $700
I am a retired veteran living in Austin and needed a ride to & from the Veterans Clinic for an appointment. I called United for the People (referred by U.S. Administration on Aging). I spoke with Mr. Shorter, he gave me my options and made an appointment to pick me up. This is a Great service for Veterans in need. Jermaine was on time & very courteous and a true gentleman. Thank You Mr. Shorter for all you do.

We moved to Pflugerville from New York and needed transportation to get to the Veterans Clinic in Austin. The VA did not provide transportation and we were at our wits end, because the services we were given either had a waiting list or only provided transportation on specified days. We contacted Mr. Shorter and was immediately provided with transportation despite the fact that we had many appointments on different days and times. He has been courteous, prompt and a joy to ride with and he has helped us to negotiate the VA system. Also, Jermaine has provided valuable information that has been helpful to a Veteran transitioning from life in New York to Texas.
Mr. Shorter is reliable, professional and steadfast in his commitment to help Veterans and his community. We have come to admire and respect this outstanding Veteran and his organization and hope others will join and support this needed service.

We are always open to volunteers wanting to assist with driving veterans to their medical appointments and assisting with fundraising needs in order to grow this program and others.
