Tanya's Changing Lives with VSA Texas
Ever since I was a little girl, I've had a secret dream of being a dancer. But, as a person living with Cerebral Palsy, I never imagined it could come true. In fact, before discovering VSA Texas, I had horrible stage fright. Now, 10 years later, I am proud to say I moved from a scared young woman who read poetry with her back to the audience to a passionate dancer. It's amazing to see how much I have grown. I am comfortable in my skin. Sometimes when I'm performing, I feel like I'm flying.
Now as an accomplished artist, VSA Texas continues to help me in hone my craft by giving me opportunities to study with some of the dance world's top teachers and artists. For instance, Gerda König, artistic director and choreographer of DIN A 13 Dance Company, taught me how to be a better performer. Karen Nelson, a renowned contact improvisation dancer, introduced me to the power and beauty of the roll. Nina Martin of the Lower Left Dance Collective is how I learned to sense my follow dancers and move as if we were a flock of birds. Finally, Alito Alessi of DanceAbility International helped me to sense my body and build a dance community. Opportunities like these are priceless to me! They provide a safe place for me to challenge myself and grow as an artist.
