Amplify VSA Texas with April

by April Sullivan

I have worked at VSA Texas since 2002 because I love the impact we make on Texas artists with disabilities. Every day I get the opportunity to meet and talk to creative individuals who are putting their heart and soul into their passion of visual art, music, writing or performance. This inspires me to go home and do the same thing with my art. But none of this happens without funding! We squeeze every dollar to make sure we can get one more young student into an internship or one more exhibition opportunity for our visual artists. It would be nice to be able to do this without so much squeezing! That is where you can help. I hope you join me in this fundraising campaign! Just $10-20 dollars from all of my friends will make a difference in the life of an artist with a disability. Help me continue doing what I love!

Tanya's Changing Lives with VSA Texas

by Tanya Winters

Ever since I was a little girl, I've had a secret dream of being a dancer. But, as a person living with Cerebral Palsy, I never imagined it could come true. In fact, before discovering VSA Texas, I had horrible stage fright. Now, 10 years later, I am proud to say I moved from a scared young woman who read poetry with her back to the audience to a passionate dancer. It's amazing to see how much I have grown. I am comfortable in my skin. Sometimes when I'm performing, I feel like I'm flying. Now as an accomplished artist, VSA Texas continues to help me in hone my craft by giving me opportunities to study with some of the dance world's top teachers and artists. For instance, Gerda König, artistic director and choreographer of DIN A 13 Dance Company, taught me how to be a better performer. Karen Nelson, a renowned contact improvisation dancer, introduced me to the power and beauty of the roll. Nina Martin of the Lower Left Dance Collective is how I learned to sense my follow dancers and move as if we were a flock of birds. Finally, Alito Alessi of DanceAbility International helped me to sense my body and build a dance community. Opportunities like these are priceless to me! They provide a safe place for me to challenge myself and grow as an artist. Please consider a gift today. BE the reason artists like me follow their dreams! $25 buys arts supplies for children attending one of our arts festivals like Art in the Park or White Cane Day. $50 pays for provides professional development training for a teacher in the Creative Learning Initiative $100 pays for an audio description receiver to assist patrons who are blind at theater and other events. $350 sponsors a young person with a disability to participate in a New Media Arts summer camp. $500 supports a Disabled Artist Veteran Writing Workshop $1000 supports a 10-week teaching artist residency in a special education classroom. $5000 underwrites a guest choreographer at our Body Shift Intensive, a partnership with Forklift Danceworks

by Victor Martinez

VSA is an international organization supporting the arts and the disabled. We are in 31 states and 52 countries, from Albania to Uruguay, representing Europe, Asia, South America, North America, the Middle East, and Australia. In Texas and around the world, VSA has had an enormous impact by providing opportunities for the disabled to both create and appreciate art in all its many forms. Disabled artists can find solidarity in the fact that artists from all over the world enjoy success and personal fulfillment through VSA. This worldwide organization, founded by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith, increases access to the arts for everybody. VSA Texas provides those opportunities all across the state. It gives disabled artists in the performing and visual arts a chance to pursue their passions. Our organization helps integrate artists into society, who might otherwise feel marginalized due to their disability. VSA Texas has programs like Opening Minds Opening Doors, Bodyshift, New Media Arts, and Audio Description, along with their Veteran's Services and Side by Side Internships. They help shed a positive light on how people with diverse abilities can contribute to society as a whole. Many programs involve family and community partnerships. There are many obstacles to making art inclusive. As you can imagine, funding for programs is one of the challenges VSA Texas faces. As a VSA board member, I have committed to raise $500 during Amplify Austin's community wide fundraising event on March 2&3. To meet my goal I must have the help of my friends, family and others. Please support my efforts by scheduling your donation today. Together, we can make a world of difference in these artists' lives. On behalf of VSA Texas, I thank you in advance for your contribution.

All Write All Write All Write!

by Stephanie Whallon

Everyone deserves the opportunity to tell their story. VSA Texas makes it possible for people of all abilities to share their stories through the arts. As an instructor for the Re-Integration Project I have the privilege of working with veteran writers. Week after week I'm amazed at their strength and talent and their ability to find healing by finding their voices as writers. Give to VSA Texas and make arts inclusive for people disabilities!
