LIVESTRONG has partnered with the University of Texas to create the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes at the Dell Medical School of The University of Texas at Austin. Together, we are creating a comprehensive cancer care model that puts survivors' needs above all else, from the medical to the emotional to the practical - right here in Austin.

One of the many gaps the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes will aim to fill is the lack of local care available to adolescents and young adults (15-39 year olds, termed 'AYA') who are fighting cancer. AYAs face challenges very different than children or older adults affected by cancer. Many are in a transitional phase - in school, starting a job, or thinking about starting a family of their own. The LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes will provide support that treats the whole person, not just the disease. The LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes will help AYAs win the fight over cancer AND get their lives back once they've won.

The LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes will be located at the University of Texas at Austin, allowing easy access to care for the thousands of adolescents and young adults that call Austin home.

Impact Statement

The LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes will bring first-class cancer care to Austin. Cancer care professionals will provide whole person care - from the moment of their cancer diagnosis, throughout the balance of their cancer journey. With your help, we will be able to make sure Austin residents have the care and support they need to live with, through, and beyond cancer.

Needs Statement

Cancer is the #1 cause of death in Travis County. With a lack of resources available to young adults fighting cancer in Austin, the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes are needed now more than ever.

Your dollars can help ensure young Austinites have access to the cancer care they need. Donate today, and your donation will be matched by Loewy Law Firm!
"I was left physically and emotionally beaten and suddenly expected to continue my once-budding life…If I had been given access to fertility preservation options, financial help, and emotional support from the beginning, I can only imagine how much I would have benefited." - Liz, AYA Cervical Cancer Survivor. Read her full story below.

"At the age of 25, my life seemed picture-perfect; I had just moved from Texas to San Diego to start my first 'big girl' job, but behind the scenes, I was struggling with an undiagnosed illness that was causing me extreme pain. I was told by my gynecologist that my symptoms were due to hormones and that I should take birth control to alleviate them…a year and a half a few more misdiagnoses later, I was told 'you have cancer.' I had stage 2 cervical cancer that had spread to nearby lymph nodes. My treatment plan called for 5 rounds of weekly chemotherapy, 31 daily doses of external radiation, and internal radiation through brachytherapy. I was told by my oncologist that radiation would destroy my ovaries, causing infertility and early menopause - and that I didn't have an option to harvest my eggs before treatment. I moved back to Texas for my treatment and met with another oncologist and fertility specialist who gave me hope that I would be able to harvest my eggs after all - only to find out I couldn't afford the $15,000 price tag. I begrudgingly canceled my IVF appointment and started my cancer treatment.

The scariest part of my cancer journey wasn't my diagnosis or treatment; it was when my treatment came to an end, and I suddenly wondered 'what now'? I no longer had doctors planning my every move, and I was left physically and emotionally beaten and suddenly expected to continue my once-budding life. Life after cancer is difficult for anyone, but most young adults are at a turning point - graduating high school or in college or just started their first job. Cancer turns those plans upside down, and having access to emotional support, career counseling, and fertility preservation options is something that is desperately needed. If I had been given access to fertility preservation options, financial help, and emotional support from the beginning, I can only imagine how much I would have benefited." - Liz, AYA Cervical Cancer Survivor
