Wanna hear a sad song? Throughout the country (and even here in the "Live Music Capital of the World"), public schools are actually eliminating music programs. No band, no choir, no place for dreams to begin. Grounded in Music works with underprivileged youth to expose kids to music starting in grade 6 by providing music instruction, exposure to nationally known musicians, concerts, backstage passes, and scholarships. This early introduction can lead to many benefits. Studies show that young children who develop rhythm skills perform better academically in early school years and that music students score higher on their SAT's in both verbal and math, regardless of socio-economic background. Since its inception, Grounded In Music has served over 500 underprivileged children through programming at the Boys and Girls Clubs, Housing Authority facilities, and local schools.
With your help, Grounded in Music can achieve its goals to:
Provide additional program locations (including a mobile recording unit)
Increase program enrollment to serve an additional 225 kids
Hire two additional music program instructors to address needs and concerns of GIM students
Partner with additional nonprofits (e.g., YMCA)
Increase participation from the music community (musicians and industry professionals)
Produce concert events at the conclusion of each session with a guest artist
Increase donor and sponsorship funding levels
Create scholarship opportunities for GIM students.
