We presented our studies and findings on phonology and our intensive speech model at the national convention for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in Philadelphia.
Our team will be presenting our phonology findings at the International Stroke Conference in Houston, Texas and the state convention for the Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association in Austin, Texas.
In addition, Six of our clients successfully completed the pilot study for Transcranial Direct-Current Stimulation where the goal is to improve speech-language recovery through intensive verb therapy that is supplemented with electrical stimulation.
We are proud to state that, we have completed four research papers that are waiting to be peer-reviewed and then published. The topics include: Intensive Music Therapy, Intensive Speech Therapy, Phonology, and Transcrainial Direct-Current Stimulation.
Our research team is continually keeping up-to-date with current research articles to continue implementing various techniques here at Austin Speech Labs. Our goal is to not only provide the clients of Austin Speech Labs with the best evidence based practices, but to share / publish our findings with other individuals, organizations, and journals so that stroke survivors across the country and the world can share in the positive outcomes.
Our research goal for 2017 is to keep learning, studying, and developing new topics, ideas, and techniques to speed up speech-language recovery post stroke within Austin Speech Labs and various collaborators such as Seton Hospital, Dell Medical School, St. David's Health, and many more.
In 2016, we provided ~$57,000 worth of discounted & free therapy for our clients that fall under our sliding scale qualifications. Collectively within the organization we provided ~15,000 of therapy to stroke survivors. Please help us reach our goal of $50,000 to keep providing low-cost intensive therapy.
Our overall program goal for 2017 is to have a 25% increase in the amount of clients that receive our services. We also hope to open our volunteer training program to various members and business leaders of the Austin Community!
In most cases, patients not covered by health insurance, speech therapy typically costs $200-$250 for an initial assessment, then about $100 to almost $250 per hour. Typically, private therapy in Texas charges $250 for an initial assessment, then $120 for a half-hour session -- or $240 an hour.
At Austin Speech Labs, we charge $50 for an initial assessment and $10 an hour for speech therapy and we offer free and discounted services for those who meet the qualifications.
Our clients typically come for three hours per day, three days of the week for 8 weeks. $720 could fund a stroke survivor for an entire 8-week session of speech therapy.
Austin Speech Labs opened our doors in 2008 and have been growing ever since. We believe that all stroke survivors, regardless of where they are in their recovery or their economic situation, should receive as much therapy as they need to find their words.
Our speech and cognitive therapy pushes back against the traditional belief that stroke survivors only have a small window of time to recover after their stroke. Our data shows that survivors can continue to make progress as long as they are getting the therapy they need.
Donating $720 funds a stroke survivor for an entire 8-week session of speech therapy.
Donating $100 funds a stroke survivor for 1 week of speech therapy.
Donating $30 funds a stroke survivor for 1 day of speech therapy.
Donating $10 funds a stroke survivor for 1 hour of speech therapy.
Help us reach our goal of $50,000 to continue reaching our clients goals!
"Stroke recovery is scary. We didn't know where to turn for help after traditional therapy was completed. Austin Speech Labs not only provided us with remarkably effective results after standard post-stroke therapy but a family of survivors and caregivers as well. It's a community where you will be welcomed." - Austin Speech Labs Caregiver
"I really love this place - it is truly a rewarding experience. I hope to keep volunteering until I graduate!" - University of Texas at Austin Volunteer

Our volunteers come from various universities across Texas and during the summer semester, we have volunteers from universities across the country!
In 2017, we hope to expand our volunteer program to community volunteers and business members.
