We presented our studies and findings on a functional outcome scale for speech and language disability in stroke at the International Stroke Conference.

We opened our doors to community volunteers. Allowing community members the opportunity to work one on one with our clients.

We partnered with The University of Texas nursing students. The students will monitor our clients vitals and day to day health while learning the fundamentals of speech and language rehabilitation after stroke.

We hosted the first annual World Stroke Day Health Fair in Austin, Texas. Providing resources and contacts for stroke survivors and their families.

Our research goal for 2018 is to keep learning, studying, and developing new topics, ideas, and techniques to speed up speech-language recovery post stroke within Austin Speech Labs and various collaborators such as Seton Hospital, Dell Medical School, St. David's Health, and many more.

Impact Statement

In most cases, patients not covered by health insurance, speech therapy typically costs $200-$250 for an initial assessment, then about $100 to almost $250 per hour. Typically, private therapy in Texas charges $250 for an initial assessment, then $120 for a half-hour session -- or $240 an hour.

At Austin Speech Labs, we charge $100 for an initial assessment and $30 an hour for speech therapy and we offer free and discounted services for those who meet the qualifications.

Our clients typically come for three hours per day, three days of the week for 8 weeks.

Austin Speech Labs opened our doors in 2008 and have been growing ever since. We believe that all stroke survivors, regardless of where they are in their recovery or their economic situation, should receive as much therapy as they need to find their words.

Our speech and cognitive therapy pushes back against the traditional belief that stroke survivors only have a small window of time to recover after their stroke. Our data shows that survivors can continue to make progress as long as they are getting the therapy they need.

Needs Statement

"Austin Speech Labs has fundamentally changed the way I think about my education and career, and given me a deep passion for helping and advocating for people with communication disorders. St. David's Foundation has offered a $1M matching grant to be distributed among their nonprofit Grant Partners on Amplify Austin Day. St. David's Foundation's 2018 Grant Partners will receive funds on a pro-rata basis. Each nonprofit will receive matching funds based on their total funds raised on Amplify Austin Day. Last year, this match resulted in a 30% boost to the funds raised by Grant Partners on the Day.

Austin Speech Labs is truly grateful for our student volunteers and would not be able to provide our affordable services without them. We provide clinical training and experience for these volunteers and they in turn help our organization by assisting with client training and the day to day needs of our therapists. This opportunity provides hand-on 1:1 volunteer to client experience that allows our volunteers to get a jump start on practicing and learning therapy across a variety of clients.

Our volunteers come from various universities across Texas and during the summer semester, we have volunteers from universities across the country!

In 2017 we expanded our volunteer program to community volunteers and business members.
