Austin Achieve is growing!

This fall, we are opening our brand new elementary school campus and welcoming 450 students in K-2nd grade. By focusing on rigorous academics, whole-child development, emotional intelligence, and digital literacy, we will put scholars on an early path to success, guiding them as they grow.

Opening our new elementary school is an exciting and challenging journey; to ensure our incoming scholars have everything they need to learn and thrive, we need your help. Your donation will help us build out five key components of our school: STEM, literacy, athletics, arts, and social & emotional wellness.

Impact Statement

Austin Achieve's focus is on providing high-quality educational opportunities to families living in the 78723 zip code. When we opened our doors to the AAPS inaugural class in 2012, we knew we were up against decades of dysfunction in the education systems in our community, recently home to the lowest-performing middle school in the state of Texas. Despite ongoing challenges, we have already seen measurable results that we believe will not only ensure our scholars are college-ready, but also help to end the cycle of poverty in our historically economically disadvantaged community.

The scholars we serve are 88% Latino, 8% African American and 4% Caucasian; 93% of our student body is part of the Free and Reduced Lunch program, with eligibility determined by proximity to the poverty line.

Because of our community's struggles, our scholars need strong supports in place to help them prepare for college. At Austin Achieve we focus on developing the "whole child"; this means that we educate scholars through a comprehensive approach including rigorous academics, social and emotional learning, and an emphasis on digital literacy.

Needs Statement

Since opening in 2012 with 125 6th grade students, Austin Achieve has grown to now serve over 800 scholars in grades 6-11. Our focus on providing high-quality education and programming to all of our scholars has resulted in high achievements, including a rank within the top 15% of schools in the state. Our scholars outperform their peers at nearby schools by a measurable margin. Imagine what our scholars could achieve if they were able to start kindergarten as an AAPS Polar Bear.

We live in a technologically-based society where more and more jobs fall within the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math). As educators, our role is to prepare our scholars for these jobs, many of which haven't even been created yet. Our focus on STEM includes:
--An on-campus makerspace where scholars can create, explore, and collaborate using exciting materials and innovative technologies
--A STEM class where students explore the engineering process through activities like robotics and coding
--Advanced math curriculum that prepares all scholars to take Algebra 1 in eighth grade and Trigonometry, Statistics, and AP Calculus at the high school level

Our scholars come to Austin Achieve an average of three grade levels behind in reading. To work on closing this gap, our elementary school scholars will have high quality literacy education and resources, including:
--A 1,000+ sq ft. library with over 10,000 books, including a partnership with the Austin Public Library
--Reading Intervention classes to assist struggling readers with individualized instruction and small class sizes
--An ethnic-studies based curriculum that engages scholars in the reading and discussion of multicultural texts

We are committed to the health of our scholars. Participating in sports and physical activity is linked to higher performance in the classroom and helps young Polar Bears develop teamwork and social skills. Our offerings will include:
--A robust elementary soccer program
--A variety of after-school sports teams (Austin Achieve holds two state championship titles!)
--Daily Physical Education classes and recess for exercise and play

With our extended school day, we have more flexibility to engage scholars in artistic activities. At the elementary level, we will have:
--An art class for all scholars, allowing them to explore different mediums and styles of art
--A music class where scholars will sing, play instruments, and discover musical genres through movement
--Electives and clubs that explore topics like poetry, theater, and dance

As our elementary scholars grow and experience the world, we are committed to their social and emotional development. We educate the "whole child" through:
--Restorative practices, including mindfulness techniques, morning circles, and a blended learning classroom where scholars talk through behavioral infractions
--A unique SEL curriculum that explores topics like friendships, emotions, stress management, and character building
--A peer-to-peer mentoring program that fosters positive relationships and develops leadership skills

"We want our students in elementary school to build strong self-esteem and confidence in themselves, because we know if we can help them do that at an early age, their chances of success in middle school, high school, and beyond go up a lot." ~Greta Kwedar, Elementary Principal-in-Residence

Lunch and Learn Program (1 time, 1 hour commitment)
Our Lunch & Learn program invites local professionals to have lunch with a small group of Austin Achieve high school scholars to tell them more about their experience as a professional in Central Texas. The purpose is to provide students with a unique opportunity to meet successful business professionals so they can increase their college and career readiness. Lunch & Learn events are held Fridays from 12-12:30 Austin Achieve campus.

Achieve Classroom Mentor (1+ hours per week)
As a classroom mentor, you will work with students either one-on-one, or in a small group setting. We have a need for mentors in multiple class subjects throughout the day, Monday-Thursday. We ask that mentors make a consistent commitment by volunteering during the same time and day each week, for a minimum of 6 weeks.

Achieve Internship (5+ hours per week)
Austin Achieve is actively seeking university students to intern with us for academic credit and educational enrichment. Internships are unpaid and run 5-10 hours per week, for 8-12 weeks. Our staff is a diverse mix of experienced and young professionals who are a valuable resource for students looking for mentorship while transitioning from graduation to a career.

Group Give Back Days (1-2 times per semester)
Group Give Back Days bring our community together to complete impactful campus enhancement projects that directly contribute to our supportive and stimulating learning environments. Group Give Back Days are typically organized on weekend mornings and are open to families, corporations and community members.
