ABOUT WE CON
WE Con 2017 is an annual event featuring workshops, panel discussions, and a robust resource fair. This year's theme "Healing & Resistance," will incorporate topics of social justice, healing arts, health, wellness, reproductive justice, DIY skills, and more.
ABOUT ALT GIRL CINEMA
#AltGirlCinema brings an alternative cinematic representation of women's lives to Austin with film screenings. Alt Girl deviates from the mainstream, screening contemporary art films across a plethora of genres, including horror, sci-fi, documentary, experimental, and more. Alt Girl stresses the importance of complex characters giving a multidimensional view of womanhood in today's society.
ABOUT HEALING THROUGH THE ARTS
Healing Through the Arts is a pop-up art series, presented by the Women's Community Center of Central Texas. We working with various women's arts groups in the Austin community, such as Hive Arts Collective, Ashe Arts, and Colectiva Cosmica to provide healing within an arts context. The Women's Community Center values nurturing the whole person, and balancing spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical needs. The WCC and collaborating organizations work toward community and inclusivity among trans/queer/cis women, and non-binary individuals.
In the last year, we have served over 1,000 women and girls with educational workshops, film screenings, art shows, resource referrals, and other services.
In 2016, we hosted many events focused on women's artistic expression, connection, and community. The annual Women's Empowerment Conference connects 250 women and girls to each other, and the community. We're looking forward to the fourth annual conference on April 22, 2017.
We've partnered with more than 30 other community organizations, including Latinitas Austin, Mamas of Color Rising, Women in Games International - Austin, SafePlace, allgo, Planned Parenthood, Bridge Collective, and Alma de Mujer, to provide great content and opportunities for women and girls to connect, learn, and grow.
As a growing nonprofit, we're proud of what we've accomplished and look forward to doing even more for central Texas women, girls, and individuals outside of the gender binary in 2017!
We want to offer free child care at all WCC events. Your support will help us hire trained caregivers for two programs - Alt Girl Cinema and the Women's Empowerment Conference. We use local business Mom's Best Friend for all childcare needs.
The Women's Empowerment Conference (WE Con) is our biggest annual event, bringing together the community to share knowledge and insights, build community, and find self-empowerment. Your support will enable us to provide free food and snacks, child care, Spanish interpretation, and, most importantly, make it possible for participants to attend at a low cost.
Alt Girl Cinema features films that are made by women, locally and internationally. We invite filmmakers to hold Question & Answer talkbacks before or after the films. We need funds for screening fees, presenter fees, childcare, and snacks.
"I collaborated with the Women's Empowerment Conference 2015 as translator of some materials from English to Spanish. When I attended the conference I was glad at how many participants requested the materials in Spanish. As a volunteer, I felt beneficial by providing participants with the opportunity to receive information in the language they are most comfortable in. I witness great diversity at WECon2015, and I believe this would not have been possible without the the Women's Community Center's commitment to Language Justice." - Verónica Rivera-Negrón
"The purpose of Alt Girl is completely relevant to my life. Showing, displaying, and playing media and movies that highlight women not normally shown is great. I want to be able to see all types of women." - guest at the Alt Girl May screening
I've been amazed and inspired by the committed volunteers who have been supporting the WCC's efforts to organize our annual Women's Empowerment Conference. I think it speaks to the fact that we're trying to do something different and meaningful in the Austin community. We believe in fun, community-driven efforts and I think that resonates with people." - Rocío Villalobos, WCC Board Member
"There is nothing like Alt Girl Cinema. I am so inspired to see women pushing the movie game forward with honest, smart films." - Mari, Alt Girl Cinema attendee
