Mission Statement

Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center inspires people to develop a lifelong practice of enjoying and protecting nature.

Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center has been introducing children and adults to the joy and wonder of nature since 1976. At our preserve and beyond, we extend our mission to inspire people to develop the lifelong practice of protecting and enjoying nature through programs and projects in conservation, education, and collaboration. Funding from the Amplify Austin Day of Giving will be used to support Legacy Camp 2017.

Legacy Camp is a five-day, four-night camping retreat with the goal of fostering the next generation of conservation leaders. These young, enthusiastic, and diverse leaders (ages 18 - 29) will attend sessions on leadership styles, community organizing, and how to tell their story while camping on the pristine Shield Ranch in Western Travis County.

After camp these Natural Leaders will use their peer to peer support network to bring about change in their communities and connect children and their families with the outdoors. During the year these young leaders will be supported by the Children in Nature Collaborative of Austin and its 41 member organizations.

Impact Statement

Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center is rooted in a 40 year history of nurturing a pristine site and encouraging a connection with nature by providing high-quality environmental education for schoolchildren and the public. In 2016, more than 17,000 visitors hiked through our 76-acre Preserve to be awed by our dramatic limestone grotto, waterfall and cave. Our leadership in the Children in Nature Collaborative of Austin ensures that from an early age, kids learn to feel comfortable in nature. And that their connection to the natural world turns into an essential part of their daily lives, both as kids and later as adults. Our partnership with El Ranchito summer camp continues our mission and serves as a shining example of connecting youth to nature. Ours is a complete approach to advocating for the right of children to be outside more often.

This year our work with the Natural Leaders Network of Austin will help young conservationists find their voice in the conservation movement. This next generation of environmental stewards will help protect our public lands, our wildlife, and our water by reconnecting their peers to the natural world.

Maggie - Legacy Camp Participant 2016

"We want to have a generation of people who care about nature and who are involved in creating the polices that will save it. That is why I went to Legacy Camp."
