United Way has been part of the fabric of Austin since 1924; nationally the organization celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2012. Our local United Way Navigation Center received the first 2-1-1 call in the state over a decade ago, and early in 2012 the Navigation Center responded to its two millionth call. Now, we're proud to celebrate more than 90 years of serving the community we love.

Impact Statement

United Way for Greater Austin is committed to creating a thriving community for all. Each year, we help more than 10,000 parents, teachers and children increase the number of school-ready children, our 2-Gen initiative helps more than 7,000 families become more financially stable, 200 parents gain job skills so that they can better support their families and our 2-1-1 Navigation Center answers more than 350,000 calls, connecting Austinites to services they need.

Needs Statement

With the first month of our new year behind us, the word that best describes this particular moment at United Way for Greater Austin is momentum. Looking back it is clear that the new United Way for Greater Austin is in the best place to change our city for the better.

As Austin grows rapidly, it also has become one of the most economically segregated cities in America. According to the most recent census data, more than 150,000 Austin residents live below the federal poverty level. Of these, more than 16,000 residents are children who are under the age of 6. With A newly refined mission focused on uprooting poverty, new partnerships with essential community organizations and a new team of capable, compassionate staff, has created a unique opportunity for us to accomplish extraordinary things together in the coming year.

To realize our vision for a thriving community for all, it's going to take every one of us pulling together to ensure all of us have a shot at the promise of Austin. We encourage you to share this message and invite your friends and family to join our efforts and let's reach our highest potential together.

We can only do this with you.
"My life would have been completely different without United Way.
It's afforded me a life that I didn't come from and didn't think was
possible for me, and I looked back and realized United Way got
me where I am today. I haven't reached all of my goals in life yet,
but now I know that I'm capable of doing it--and I didn't know that
before."
- Lisa, Former United Way Services Recipient, Current Donor

"I previously worked at the Domestic Violence Hotline. When we didn't have resources, we knew we could connect callers to 2-1-1 and hopefully they would be connected to other resources that weren't in our database."
-Alma, 2-1-1 Healthcare Navigation Specialist

"2-1-1 is the most effective way of getting resources out into the community. It is a gathering of many people, many facets, that create one big jewel." - Arnoldo, 2-1-1 Healthcare Navigation Specialist

"I always tell everyone I know about 2-1-1, because it is the greatest resource we have here in Austin. United Way is the friendly voice at the end of the phone line that gets you connected to the resources you need."
-Kelsey, Corporate Account Manager

"2-1-1 helped me when I needed it the most."
-Caller Testimonial, follow up about immediate food assistance

Hands On Central Texas, a program of United Way for Greater Austin, strengthens communities through meaningful volunteer action. We engage thousands of Central Texans in volunteerism annually and empower people to make volunteering a regular part of their lives through our annual Days of Service and Corporate Team Building projects.

Hands On Central Texas is dedicated to volunteering on a flexible basis, providing projects and opportunities for volunteers to make a real, positive impact on our community's most pressing issues. In addition to connecting people to volunteer opportunities, Hands On Central Texas runs a number of projects and programs aimed at sparking sustained, passionate community service. Among these initiatives are:

Services Provided by Get Connected (our Hands on Central Texas volunteer database)
Hands On Central Texas utilizes Get Connected, an innovative technology platform that enables full cycle volunteer engagement and management as our volunteer database. Get Connected has the capacity to:
· Identify and recruit volunteers for agencies in Central Texas that can use your volunteer support;
· Assist companies with internal volunteer recruitment;
· Communicate project logistics to volunteers; and
· Build a philanthropic resume by tracking individual volunteer hours.

Nonprofits from all over Central Texas utilize this database to recruit volunteers for their organization. Visit handsoncentraltexas.org to find the agency or project that best fits your passion and interest.
