We have a new STEAM Program for Families in Nature. We train teachers, community leaders and FIN Guides to implement this program to connect people to nature while fostering the next generation of conservationists. The Ecologist School Program includes information for leaders on how to teach hope, how to engage people of all ages and backgrounds together, and over 1400 experiential lessons in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math, Outdoor Skills, Volunteerism, and Leadership in each of sixteen branches of science (such as Hydrology, Mammalogy, Meteorology and Botany). A working knowledge of many branches of science is required to become certified as a Junior Ecologist or a Citizen Ecologist. All lessons in the curriculum are hands-on and can be taught outdoors. This Program is a new community resource to create strong families, healthy people and community connected to nature.

Needs Statement

Families in Nature strives to include families from all backgrounds in our programs. Participation of under-resourced families and families from ethnicities that are under-represented in the environmental movement depends on funds donated by individuals in addition to foundation grants. Please help us provide equitable access to nature and experiential science education to under-resourced and under-represented families from all over Texas.
"I may not have been prepared to (go canoeing) alone, but when I am in the program with you guys, I feel confident." - Carlos (FIN parent), quote translated from Spanish to English

"They make me want to not only stop littering and pollution, but they also make me want to learn more about nature." - FIN 10 yr old

"I cannot express how lucky our family feels to be a part of Families in Nature. Unlike other outdoor groups that separate kids into "boy" or "girl" activities, our family is able to share all these experiences together. We've camped, rock-climbed, learned archery, and snorkeled together. These are all things we could do on our own, but having a group of families and knowledgeable guides to do them with makes the experience so much richer. In a world that increasingly pulls us in different directions - FIN allows us to learn, explore and make memories as a family." - Johnna

"The kids that are participating in FiN are creative, resourceful and smart and are reason for hope and investment." - Molly Stevens
The Shield-Ayres Foundation has offered a $11,000 matching grant to be distributed among all participating environmental organizations on Amplify Austin Day. These nonprofit organizations will receive funds on a pro-rata basis. Each nonprofit will receive matching funds based on their total funds raised on Amplify Austin Day.
Families in Nature invites volunteers to help teach science and nature education to families, guide our family nature communities, and provide bilingual nature education to the community. You can register as a volunteer on our website and help us get families from all backgrounds out into nature to play, learn and volunteer together.
