Mission Statement

Engaging and empowering youth through education and outdoor experiences

Thanks to generosity of many Amplify Austin donors, last summer hundreds of Austin's low income youth experienced a world outside of their own and received the gift of a FREE overnight summer camp. The gift of a FREE summer camp and afterschool programs helps to transform lives by continuing to provide a haven where our community's low income youth experience the natural beauty and wonder of the outdoor environments within Zilker Park and on the shores of Lake Travis.

Out of school educational opportunities within Austin Sunshine Camps(ASC) do not stop when the summer is over. Our Sunshine Afterschool Program extends learning and engages middle school students in STEM, life skills, and outdoor experiences five days a week.

The target population for Sunshine Afterschool is 6th through 8th grade whose family income is 180% of the Federal Poverty Line. The families of students in this program must qualify for free or reduced lunch in order to participate.

The primary goals of the program are to provide academic outcomes, promote social and emotional development and provide innovative outdoor experiences for middle school students in the ASC community. ASC uses our extensive background in outdoors and education to provide an exceptional opportunity for students to go to "camp" every day of the week.

Impact Statement

Igniting infinite possibilities for Austin's youth

Many of the youth who attended had never been to camp before. They were nervous to be away from their families and did not know what to expect. Those fears soon passed as our volunteers and staff greeted them with a high five and told them about the fun they would have over the next week. It was a week of firsts - first time in a canoe, first time climbing on a ropes course, and first time swimming in Lake Travis. While there is no doubt they all left with fantastic memories and lifelong friends, they also left with a love for the outdoors and learning, as well as an increased confidence in themselves.

Because of our generous Amplify Austin donors, Austin Sunshine Camps(ASC) are able to provide the highest quality educational outdoor experiences at no cost, instilling strong character traits such as leadership, teamwork and respect.
Volunteers play a key role in supporting the Austin YMBL Sunshine Camps. All volunteers much complete a nationwide criminal background check as well as be fingerprinted by DPS prior to having any contact with students or campers.
Sunshine Afterschool provides 60 volunteer slots per week. Six volunteer slots will be offered on a daily basis, durig the homework hour. Six volunteer slots will be offered during the curriculum block on a daily basis as well. Volunteers will have the opportunity to sign up for as many or as few slots as they are able. Volunteer orientation will be provided.

Up to 30 volunteers for carnival nights are also available during the 8 summer sessions of camp. Additionally, volunteers are needed to prepare the camps for opening. Corporate groups can sign up for prep, clean up special events.
