Austin YMBL Sunshine Camps Add to Favorites

The mission of Austin Sunshine Camps is to engage and empower youth through education and outdoor experiences.

Each summer, Austin Sunshine Camps offers 1,200 low-income, high potential youth from Central Texas an opportunity to attend a week of free overnight summer camp. Campers spend more than 8 hours each day exploring nature, fostering a greater appreciation for the outdoors, and making new friends. Camp sessions teach life skills, self-confidence, trust and teamwork while providing outdoor recreation through activities such as, hiking, swimming, ropes courses, canoeing and more. Our summer camps positively impact our campers by giving them a place to be physically active and to continue learning over the summer months.

Your donation to Austin Sunshine Camps will benefit low-income youth in our community by providing them the opportunity to attend summer camp at no cost. Most of our youth have never traveled outside of their neighborhoods and have not experienced the beauty of Zilker Park, have never been to Barton Springs or kayaked on Lady Bird Lake, until they come to Sunshine Camps. By supporting Austin Sunshine Camps you can help make summer camp a reality for hundreds of deserving youth in our community this year!

Thanks to the generosity of many Amplify Austin donors, last summer we served more campers than ever before, in our 90-year history. The gift of a FREE summer camp and after school programming helps to transform lives by continuing to provide a haven where our community's low-income youth experience the natural beauty and wonder of the outdoor environments within Zilker Park and on the shores of Lake Travis.

Our out-of-school educational opportunities do not stop when the summer is over. Our Sunshine Afterschool Program extends learning and engages middle school students in STEM, life skills, and outdoor experiences five days a week.

Program successes include the following:
• During the 2016/17 school year we provided 148 days of afterschool programming, totaling 518 hours of service.
• 90% of participating students improved their math grades from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
• 100% of students agreed that they have increased their knowledge of STEM since attending Sunshine Afterschool.
• Nearly 90% of parents surveyed reported that Sunshine Afterschool has helped improve their child's academic performance through homework help and one-on-one mentoring time.
• 88% of students who participated in focus groups agreed that what they learn at Sunshine Afterschool has helped them in the classroom.

Igniting infinite possibilities for Austin's youth

Needs Statement

With a rise in technology and lack of out of school time activity, youth today spend an average of 7.5 hours each day in front of a screen for entertainment purposes. In fact, only 20% of childhood hours are spent in school engaged in learning. All this time spent unengaged in learning or physical activity can result in negative health and educational outcomes. At Austin Sunshine Camps, we engage youth in outdoor learning, physical activities and teach healthy habits. During the camp season, campers spend more than 8 hours each day outside playing, running, swimming and experiencing nature.

Austin Sunshine Camps' programs have evolved over the years, but the mission to educate youth through new experiences is present in all of our work. Our programs enrich the community by encouraging and facilitating the power to succeed through education and healthy living.
Many of the youth who attended had never been to camp before. They were nervous to be away from their families and did not know what to expect. Those fears soon passed as our volunteers and staff greeted them with a high five and told them about the fun they would have over the next week. It was a week of firsts - first time in a canoe, first time climbing on a ropes course, and first time swimming in Lake Travis. While there is no doubt they all left with fantastic memories and lifelong friends, they also left with a love for the outdoors and learning, as well as an increased confidence in themselves.

Because of our generous Amplify Austin donors, Austin Sunshine Camps(ASC) are able to provide the highest quality educational outdoor experiences at no cost, instilling strong character traits such as leadership, teamwork and respect.
Volunteers play a key role in supporting the Austin YMBL Sunshine Camps. All volunteers much complete a nationwide criminal background check as well as be fingerprinted by DPS prior to having any contact with students or campers.
Six volunteer slots will be offered on a daily basis, during the homework hour. Six volunteer slots will be offered during the curriculum block on a daily basis as well.
